Robot unicorns are getting bigger
Figure, Physical Intelligence, Agility, Dyna Robotics have all recently fundraised at valuations of (much) more than $1B
More than one robotics, or physical AI, startup has gone from unicorn to multicorn in the last month, if we look at Physical Intelligence, Dyna Robotics, Agility, Apptronik and Figure. Figure’s recent fundraise alone was greater than $1B, valuing the company at a massive $39B. Has everyone got caught up in Elon Musk’s abundance of excitement for robots? Are robots trapped in the AI bubble? Or are we starting to see commercial viability?
According to The Information, Physical Intelligence, is in talks with investors to raise additional venture capital at a valuation of about $5 billion, which would more than double the price investors awarded the San Francisco startup in November.
Physical Intelligence (Pi) is in talks to raise capital at about a $5B valuation, more than double its $2.4B mark from November. The company may still decide not to proceed.
Founded in early 2024 by ex-Google staff, Stanford and UC Berkeley professors, and Lachy Groom.
Product: a general-purpose robot foundation model, π0, shown doing everyday tasks such as folding laundry and making coffee.
Differentiator: human-in-the-loop training rather than large-scale video or simulation. Rivals such as Skild AI lean on simulated worlds.
Prior funding: about $470M from Thrive, Lux, Khosla, Redpoint, and Bond.
Valuation momentum rides a wider hype cycle around humanoid-capable robots, amplified by bold timelines from Elon Musk and Vinod Khosla.
It is unclear whether Pi has new technical or commercial milestones that justify the step up in valuation.
Why it matters
If the round closes, it signals investor conviction in robot foundation models and in costly human-supervised data pipelines.
The open questions: data collection costs, real-world generalization, paying customers, and time to revenue.
According to McKinsey, robotics dexterity through multi-modal foundation models is the path towards general-purpose robots.
The robotics field is pivoting toward general-purpose robots. Foundation models, which identify patterns that allow robots to perform multiple tasks, could improve their dexterity, according to Partner Ani Kelkar and coauthors. Classical techniques have been sufficient for safety and remote assistance, while traditional machine learning techniques can nearly achieve human-like capabilities in mobility, such as arm movement and balance. And now, researchers are developing multimodal foundation models that would allow robots to perform actions based on visual inputs and spoken commands.

The Week’s 10 Biggest Funding Rounds: AI And Robotics Headline Busy Week For Dealmaking - Crunchbase
Figure, the AI robotics company developing autonomous general-purpose humanoid robots, today announced it has exceeded more than $1 billion in committed capital through its Series C financing round, at a post-money valuation of $39 billion. The funding will accelerate the company's efforts to bring general-purpose humanoid robots into real-world environments at scale.
The round was led by Parkway Venture Capital with significant investment from Brookfield Asset Management, NVIDIA, Macquarie Capital, Intel Capital, Align Ventures, Tamarack Global, LG Technology Ventures, Salesforce, T-Mobile Ventures, and Qualcomm Ventures.
"This milestone is critical to unlocking the next stage of growth for humanoid robots, scaling out our AI platform Helix and BotQ manufacturing," said Brett Adcock, Founder and CEO of Figure. "Support from new partners, alongside the continued backing of our existing investors, reflects both Figure's position as the market leader and a shared belief in a future where this technology becomes a natural part of daily life."
This capital raise milestone supports Figure's momentum across three core areas—all designed to unlock the full capabilities of Helix, Figure's AI system for embodied intelligence:
Scaling humanoid robots into homes and commercial operations. Figure is expanding production manufacturing at BotQ and real-world deployments, enabling robots to assist with household and commercial workforce tasks.
Building next-generation NVIDIA GPU infrastructure to accelerate training and simulation. This compute foundation will power Helix's core models for perception, reasoning, and control.
Launching advanced data collection efforts. These include data collection of human video and multimodal sensory inputs, to improve how robots understand and operate in complex, dynamic settings. These real-world datasets are essential to scaling Helix's capabilities.
According to from Jesse Coors-Blankenship and Gregg Hill, general partners at Parkway VC, on why physical AI is the next frontier and why Figure is the category outlier.
Joint statement from Jesse Coors-Blankenship and Gregg Hill, general partners at Parkway VC:
“We backed Figure from its earliest days because we saw a world-changing vision taking shape. Brett and his team are proving that autonomous humanoid robots can solve real problems and are poised to enrich everyday life. Surpassing $1 billion in committed capital at a $39 billion valuation is a powerful validation of Figure’s progress. This funding milestone marks an inflection point where we can accelerate bringing humanoid robots into homes and businesses. We’re incredibly proud to lead this round and continue our partnership with Figure on their path to transforming the future of work.”
Figure is initially planning to manufacture 12,000 humanoids per year, increasing this figure over time. :)
