Humanoids Summit Speakers announced!
The amazing women of ICRA 1984, where the women in robotics really are, and why we need to say no to 'sexy Asian lady robots' according to Annalee Newitz.
It’s a myth that there aren’t many women in robotics and that to fix it we just need to get women more interested. Women have been in robotics from the very beginning, including ‘The Women of ICRA 1984’, the seven female authors of papers in the very first International Conference on Robotics and Automation in 1984. The software and navigation stack for Joseph F. Engelberger’s HelpMate robot was written by Bala Krishnamurthy.
What’s amazing is that five of the seven women of ICRA remained in the field throughout their careers and have had a significant impact on the science of robotics. In general, more than two thirds of the women who enter robotics will leave within the first five years, and almost half will leave STEM work completely. Only 26% of women who study robotics are able to make careers. This research from Women in Robotics was compiled from global research projects and labor statistics.
We don’t need to get women interested, we need to fix the workplace problems that force them out! Keep watching WomeninRobotics.org for more profiles from the “50 Women in Robotics You Need to Know About 2024” list, as well as networking and celebration events throughout October.
I also spoke about this perception of women problem to Business Insider (Poland) ahead of keynoting at the Masters & Robots Conference.

Humanoids Summit - First exhibitors and speakers Announced!
Silicon Valley Robotics is proud to be the strategic advisor for the first Humanoids Summit, Dec 11th and 12th at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View.
The first speakers to be announced include Jonathan Hurst from Agility Robotics. You’ll also meed 1X, Apptronik, Kind Humanoids, Engineered Arts, Enchanted Tools and Hanson Robotics. And we’re just getting started.
The Summit has expanded to three tracks in order to accommodate more stellar speakers and exhibitors, and if you’re a Silicon Valley Robotics member you get a great discount on exhibiting and attending.
Jobs in Robotics!
We’ll be posting more jobs in robotics next week from Silicon Valley Robotics member companies and I think the click rate was pretty good. Our readers are primarily robotics professionals and the variation of clicks between different jobs show that people were being selective about what jobs they wanted to apply for.
Please send me your job links!
